The Mexican caballeras who call her "Fortuna" bestow her with a sash like the one her mother used to wear on horseback, and Lucky immediately falls in with a couple of capable cowgirls, Pru (Marsai Martin) and Abigail (McKenna Grace).
He's a railroad man in the town of Miradero, and as soon as she arrives, Lucky finally finds that she fits right in. Living with her stuffy grandparents, she's sent off to spend the summer with her father (Jake Gyllenhaal), from whom she's been estranged since her mother's death when she was a baby. Isabel Merced voices the young heroine, Lucky, a misfit, accident-prone girl with a wild red mane of hair (remind you of any iconic undersea princesses?). It's somewhat refreshing to see an animated film tell what is essentially a formulaic hero's journey story without relying on the extraordinary. So many animated films tend toward the supernatural, the folkloric, the magical, populated with friendly monsters and talking animals as the medium allows. What's also striking about "Spirit Untamed" is that the story is grounded within a (somewhat) realistic, recognizable world, in the 19th century American Southwest. One can't help but feel that the gender representation behind the camera is an integral part to the authentic sense of girls' empowerment espoused by the film, the story of a young girl and her unique connection to a wild mustang, Spirit.

"Spirit Untamed," the second film in the "Spirit" franchise, which also includes the 2002 film "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron," and the Netflix series "Spirit Riding Free," is written by Aury Wallington and Kristin Hahn and directed by Elaine Bogan (her co-director is Ennio Torresan Jr.), and features a female producer, composer and other female department heads. Marsai Martin, best known for her performance in sitcom Black-ish will voice one of Lucky’s friends, Pru.While reading the credits of the new animated feature "Spirit Untamed," a few things stick out: the first is the star-studded voice cast, but the second is how many women played key roles in bringing the the film to life.

He is best known for his roles in the Oscar winning Brokeback Mountain, boxing movie Southpaw and his villainous turn in Spider-Man: Far From Home. In a long and successful career, it is the first time Gyllenhaal has done voice acting for a feature film. Jake Gyllenhaal is also amongst the voice cast playing Lucky’s father, Jim. Other roles include the Mark Wahlberg comedy Instant Family and as the female lead in the very violent Sicario: Day of the Soldado where she acts alongside Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro. Merced, who also sings on the Spirit Untamed soundtrack, also played Dora the Explorer in the live action adaptation released in 2019. She came to recognition for starring in the Nickelodeon series 100 Things to do Before High School before later bagging a role in Transformers: The Last Knight. The much sought after Isabela Merced voices the lead role of Lucky in what has been a very busy few years for the nineteen-year-old.
